Artists get inspiration in many different ways, sometimes it’s a place, sometimes a color, sometimes it’s a person. I was surfing the web a while back and came across a project that the the great photographer Douglass Kirkland had done for Vanity Fair Italia to celebrate the magazines 50th anniversary. Kirkland did “remakes” of 25 famous scenes taken from Italian cinematic classics, with well-known contemporary Italian actors playing the legends of the past.

One picture that struck me in particular was Kirkland’s remake of La Ragazza con la Valiglia 1960 (Girl with Suitcase) by director Valeri Zurlini (photo seen to right). I liked starkness of the scene and the look of simplicity with the lighting.

The idea to do an updated version had been rattling around my head for a while. I had a session scheduled to shoot with a versatile model I had worked with before, Crystal,  and after talking about it a bit we figured we’d give it a shot. I decided to use the railroad tracks close to the studio and update the look to a 60-mod feel, maintaining the stark backgrounds and simple lighting, but keeping the idea of a young ladies departure as  consistent theme. Crystal had a great dress and borrow the vintage suitcases from her father, both of which worked perfectly for the “updated” look I was going for. We were racing an incoming rain shower, which actually really worked well for the atmosphere for the shoot.  Below are the results of the session, which I was very happy with….thanks again Crystal, as always great working with you, looking forward to another session!

It’s been a while since I posted last, been out shooting and processing, but now I am catching up on this side of things. I have several new shoots to post that I’ll be working on in the coming days.

So with out further adieu here we go…

I again had the good fortune to work with the very versatile model Crystal to do some work for her modeling portfolio (you may remember some of the work we did together earlier, you can see it here). It’s always fun to work with Crystal, she brings great energy and spirit to our sessions. We did a couple of shoots this day (one conceptual session that I’ll post later). Here are some shots from the other, a more straight forward fashion-oriented shoot that we did at the studio.

Crystal: Model Session: Pink Crystal: Model Session: Boxing gloves So what do you get when you combine a former Hawaiian Tropic swimsuit  and NASCAR model with a 13 year Tae Kwon Do veteran with a ball of energy? A really fun shoot with a very versatile model, that’s what!

Crystal decided to get back in to modeling after taking a break and contacted me about getting some updates for her portfolio. I knew after talking with her she was going to be great to work with and I wasn’t disappointed. She was totally on top of things, we worked very easily together (it didn’t hurt that we have the same taste in music…we listened to quite the mix that day) and we got some really good images for her updated portfolio.

Since we had the time, we decided to do both some fashiony portrait stuff and some action shots, the result was a mix of fun, sexy and in your face images that show the many dimensions of this versatile, beautiful model.

Enjoy
