PDX Strobist group shoot Sept 26 09
Well this past weekend’s trip to Portland was filled with photography fun of all sorts. It started off with a trip to Swanson Studios in downtown to check out the Marcus’ digs and man can I say “I want one”. He has an incredible space where he has developed his world class setup (check out some of his work @ swansonstudio.us).
Afterward I headed up to St Johns in N. PDX to check out a store that carries vintage cameras and typewriters (Blue Moon Camera and Machine) for an assignment I have to do (believe it or not in old school film, darkroom and all). The store had everything I needed and I made an appointment with the owner to come back on Saturday morning to do some shooting. After, I was done at Blue Moon, I met a guy who was selling one of his high-end cameras, which I ended up buying from him to use for my sports shooting. I had a great dinner and drinks with Saul one my teammate who let me crash at his place for the weekend (thanks again Saul and Courtie).
Saturday morning came and I headed out to begin a long day of shooting.
- 9:30am: First stop, Blue Moon where I shot stills (both digital and film) for about 2 hours.
- Around 1pm: I headed over the hill to a corn maze in North Plains to meet up with the PDX Strobist group, which a friend of mine is a member. PDX Strobist is a photography group for Portland/PDX based photographers who get together to shoot and discuss all things releated to off-camera lighting using strobes (flash). It was a really fun group, there were about 15 or so photographers and 6 or 7 models that showed up. We shot in the corn maze for a couple hours then headed over to one of members house (which was more like a compound) to continue shooting. I was able to experiment with several different lighting set ups, including using a flash light as my only lighting source.
- 7:30 pm: Wrapped up shooting and headed to my cycling team party all the way across on the opposite end of Portland.
Sunday, on my way home, I went to cyclocross race to give my “new” camera a trial run and shoot some pictures of my teammates, but I’ll save those for another post.
Here are some pictures from the Strobist shoot, hope you enjoy. -t-
